For most of my career, I've been fortunate to work alongside engineers, analysts, and operational leaders whose shared objective was simple: make tomorrow's operation better than today's.
During my years at Delta Air Lines, I had the opportunity to serve on one of the operational improvement teams supporting the broader transformation led by Gil West and the operations leadership team. It was an exciting time to be part of an organization that became recognized throughout the industry for operational reliability, disciplined execution, and a relentless focus on continuous improvement. Watching that transformation firsthand reinforced a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my career: lasting improvement rarely comes from a single breakthrough. It comes from consistently asking the right questions, making informed decisions, and following through.
After taking an early retirement from Delta during the COVID-19 pandemic, I continued working in reliability, first supporting a military reliability contractor and later providing technical analysis services to commercial airlines, primarily low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers. Although these organizations differed greatly in size, mission, and operating model, they confirmed something I had already begun to appreciate: the fundamentals of reliability are remarkably consistent.
The organizations that improve the most are not necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets or the newest technology. More often, they are the ones disciplined enough to ask—and answer—the right questions.
- What happened?
- Why did it happen?
- What should we do about it?
- Who owns the action?
- Did it actually work?
Those five questions continue to shape the way I approach reliability today.
Over the years my work has included reliability programs, engineering analytics, performance reporting, dashboard design, software development, and decision-support tools. The challenge has never been collecting data. It's turning information into understanding—and understanding into better decisions.
Gardner Field Notes grew from a desire to document those lessons, observations, and ideas in one place—not only to share them with others, but also to create a personal reference I can return to whenever I'm faced with a new problem or an old challenge in a different form. Like the engineering notebooks that inspired its name, these pages are intended to evolve as new experiences refine old assumptions.
This isn't an academic publication or a showcase for a particular methodology. It's simply a collection of practical observations about reliability engineering, operational performance, data analysis, leadership reporting, software, and structured problem solving. While many of the examples come from aviation, I believe the principles apply wherever people are responsible for improving complex systems.
If there is one idea that ties these articles together, it is this:
Better questions lead to better decisions. Better decisions lead to better reliability.
Whether the subject is a dashboard, a root cause investigation, a maintenance program, or a leadership report, meaningful improvement begins with understanding the problem before proposing the solution.
Engineering teaches us that today's problem often looks remarkably like one we've seen before—if we've taken the time to document what we learned. Gardner Field Notes is my attempt to preserve those lessons, challenge my own thinking, and hopefully provide a few ideas that others can adapt to their own organizations.
Reliability is not the result of a single great idea. It is the product of thousands of disciplined decisions, made consistently over time. My hope is that these field notes help make a few of those decisions a little easier.
